Hip-hop or rock

Rap?! I can't believe this.

I love rap. I'd like to know if anyone here bashing rap has actually sat down, listened to some rap by some mainstream artists, and tried to understand it?

I like it all. I'm a born rocker at heart but I can appreciate the music and lyrics of todays hip hop and rap artists. Not all, but some. I think some of them are lyrical and musical geniuses. Of course there is crap put out by artists in all genres.

Turntables outsold guitars in Europe last year. Just an interesting little tidbit for you.

Rap isn't even music, it's just rubbish.
Rock is the best type, except for the heaviest of heavy metal.

Rock is music-not all rock is heavy metal
Coldplay is rock, alternative rock. Would you say they scream like they've escaped from hell
Heavy metal is more like that-but even then not all bands are like that, Slipknot maybe, but I don't even mind that

I listened to plenty of rap, even sat down with students analyzing the arrhythmic miscounts, word butchering, and nonsensical lyrics.

Take this one, for example:

"Young Money in charge
Yes It´s Little Wayne but the moneys enlarge.
Priorities Young Money & God
Now they wanna know how I be getting money on Mars

Cause I be getting paid like outta this world
Hip-Hop is a
<profanity> and I´m proud of this Girl.
When the sharks come see how the fish curl
This is my Game you Gonna need a referral
I know more about tree than squirrel
Me no talk much but the heat so verbal
Brand New Marc Jacobs Pink Coat thermal
Gun outside of the Gear external.
I´m so fly ya´ll still at the terminal.
I´ll put you in the dirt just because I see the worm in you.
" ~ Busta Rhymes

epic fail

That isn't very fair. Each genre has crap musicians and even good musicians doing crappy songs.

I'm ever upper class high society,
God's gift to ballroom notoriety,
I always fill my ballroom
(The event is never small)
The social pages say I've got
The biggest balls of all

Oh I've got big balls
I've got big balls
And they're such big balls
Dirty big balls
And he's got big balls
And she's got big balls
But we've got the biggest balls of them all

To me that is crap. :p

aye, that one is crap alright. And Deni, I grabbed a popular group with one of their hit songs. But, if anyone would like to put this to the test, grab the lyrics of any rap song and drop it here. I'll spend a few minutes on it with my editing/grading pen. Limited offer.

Now you prob'ly get this picture from my public persona
That i'm a pistol-packing drug-addict who bags on his momma,
But i wanna just take this time out to be perfectly honest
Cos there's a lot of [stuff] i keep bottled that hurts deep inside o' ma soul,
And just know that i grow colder the older i grow
This boulder on my shoulder that gets heavy and harder to hold
And this load is like the weight of the world
And i think my neck is breaking should i just give up
Or try to live up to these expectations? now look,
I love my daughter more than life in itself,
But i got a wife who's determined to make my life living hell
But i handle it well, given the circumstances i'm dealt
So many chances, man, it's too bad, coulda had someone else
But the years that i've wasted are nothing to the tears that ive tasted
So here's what im facin: 3 felonies, 6 years of probation
I've went to jail for this woman, i've been to bat for this woman
I've taken bats to people' backs, bent over backwards for this woman
Man, i shoulda seen it comin, why'd i stick my [manhood] uppin?
Woulda ripped the pre-nup if i'd seen what she was [censored]
But [censored] it, it's over, there's no more reason to cry no more
I got my baby, maybe the only lady that i adore, haley
So sayonara, try tomorra, nice to know ya
My baby's travelled back to the arms of her rightful owner
And suddenly it seems that my shoulder blades have just shifted
Its like the greatest gift you can get
The weight has been lifted

Some words censored/changed to conform to forum rules

Ugh.

How the hell does picking a random crap song represent a genre? People who bag on rap as a genre are usually prejudice, ignorant, under-exposed, and usually all of the above. There are just as many decent rap songs as there are terrible ones and the same applies to rock. To classify one genre above another is a matter of opinion, no matter how enlightened you may think you are.

Let me put it to you this way: The talent that some of these rappers possess will far outshine what most of you in this thread who are bashing rap will accomplish in your entire life time.

I agree Divest. Crap music is crap music. Even great musicians put out crap sometimes and sometimes crap musicians are able to scrape together one good song.

We should debate overrated bands/musicians. I have several on my list that seem to never die and are held up as models for other musicians.

Aerosmith
AC/DC
Rolling Stones
George Thorogood
Van Halen after the exit of Roth
Kiss
