U.S. Military to Intercept North Korean Ship Suspected of Carrying Missiles (Nukes)

As much as I hate linking to fox...

Fox News said:
The U.S. military is planning to intercept a flagged North Korean ship suspected of proliferating weapons material in violation of a U.N. Security Council resolution passed last Friday, FOX News has learned.
The USS John McCain, a navy destroyer, will intercept the ship Kang Nam as soon as it leaves the vicinity off the coast of China, according to a senior U.S. defense official. The order to inderdict has not been given yet, but the ship is getting into position.
The ship left a port in North Korea Wednesday and appears to be heading toward Singapore, according to a senior U.S. military source. The vessel, which the military has been tracking since its departure, could be carrying weaponry, missile parts or nuclear materials, a violation of U.N. Resolution 1874, which put sanctions in place against Pyongyang.
The USS McCain was involved in an incident with a Chinese sub last Friday - near Subic Bay off the Philippines.
The Chinese sub was shadowing the destroyer when it hit the underwater sonar array that the USS McCain was towing behind it.
That same navy destroyer that was being shadowed by the Chinese is now positioning itself for a possible interdiction of the North Korean vessel.
This is the first suspected "proliferator" that the U.S. and its allies have tracked from North Korea since the United Nations authorized the world's navies to enforce compliance with a variety of U.N. sanctions aimed at punishing North Korea for its recent nuclear test.
The ship is currently along the coast of China and being monitored around-the-clock by air.
The apparent violation raises the question of how the United States and its allies will respond, particularly since the U.N. resolution does not have a lot of teeth to it.
The resolution would not allow the United States to board the ship forcibly. Rather, U.S. military would have to request permission to board -- a request North Korea is unlikely to grant.
North Korea has said that any attempt to board its ships would be viewed as an act of war and promised "100- or 1,000-fold" retaliation if provoked.
The U.S. military may also request that the host country not provide fuel to the ship when it enters its port. North Korean merchant ships usually need fuel as they approach Singapore and the ports of eastern India. When tipped off, Indian port authorities are stringent enforcers of UN sanctions against ships carrying contraband.
The U.S. Navy does not need to enforce the sanctions. Instead, it could "poison the host," a move that entails working behind the scenes with Indian Ocean port authorities to inspect and confiscate illegal cargos.
This move worked last year when U.S. officials reportedly warned Indian officials in advance of a North Korean transport aircraft that had requested permission to fly through Indian airspace on the way to Iran after stopping in Burma to refuel. The Indians refused to allow the aircraft to fly through their airspace. The aircraft reportedly was carrying gyroscopes for ballistic missiles.
The Kang Nam is known to be a ship that has been involved in proliferation activities in the past -- it is "a repeat offender," according to one military source. The ship was detained in October 2006 by authorities in Hong Kong after the North Koreans tested their first nuclear device and the U.N. imposed a subsequent round of sanctions.
The latest tension follows a Japanese news report that North Korea may fire a long-range ballistic missile toward Hawaii in early July.
Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Thursday the military is "watching" that situation "very closely," and would have "some concerns" if North Korea launched a missile in the direction of Hawaii. But he expressed confidence in U.S. ability to handle such a launch.
Gates said he's directed the deployment of the Theater High Altitude Area Defense, a mobile missile defense system used for knocking down long- and medium-range missiles.
"The ground-based interceptors are clearly in a position to take action. So, without telegraphing what we will do, I would just say ... I think we are in a good position, should it become necessary, to protect the American territory."

There's no doubt in anyone's mind that the tension in North Korea is skyrocketing (hrhr). This whole situation seems ridiculous. They've reacted horribly to any negotiations to quit their nuclear weapons program and stated that any attempts to intercept would result in ULTIMATE DEATH RETALIATION 3000 (<---exact quote). Basically, if the U.S. makes any attempt to board the North Korean vessel without permission, I may as well start saying my goodbye's to you people now.

North Korea greatly lacks the ability to wage a war against the U.S. and their nuclear program, while existing, is sorely lacking in the capacity to deliver.

I wasn't being entirely serious at the end of my post there. I didn't think I would need to point that out, either.

Fox Rox :p

Now, As for the NK threat, I imagine that soon the people themselves will get sick of their dictator (Or should I say, "Lil' Tater") That they will overthrow him.

As far as I am concerned, Their Lil' Tater can just rot for now, and when his son comes into office, lets all hope he has some common sense.

The odds of a "revolution" is slim to none. The North Korean military is extremely well-funded and their media is extremely filtered. As a matter of fact, I read somewhere that the North Koreans support their nuclear program because they were told that the US has prepared to launch nukes from South Korea.

Oh... Well then, I guess that either North Korea is screwed, or the US is screwed. (Well, all of the countries within a 6000 mile radius of North Korea are definitely screwed, so Alaska is at risk)

I'm sure with Sarah Palin's awesome foreign policy experience that Alaska will be screwed just fine.

I agree. Their west coast will be screwed just fine for sure~Unless the US strikes first, then North Korea will be screwed hitting a bad stroke of luck.

Seriusly why would they launch a nuke ???

We all know what happens if they do !

The population of NK might be starving and so on ...

But those on the top live like kings. And i think that is all that they want is to keep it that way.

They launch a missile test every now and then to keep the country isolated and they can keep ruling with an iron fist without the demand for democracy from the rest of the world.

We seem to be ok with them beeing a dictatorship and there population starving as long as they don`t test any nuklear bombs :eek:hmy:

I mean they know full and well that if they launch a nuke on anyone they will no longer exist as a country and they are not f..ed up by religion there to not care about there own existance.

Now on the otherhand if Iran gets nukes i will be more worried they might be willing to " go to paradise " if they only can whipe out Israel first.

I don't understand why North Korea is banned from having Nuclear Missiles/Weaponry when the U.S Military has quite a few. Besides, the U.S have caused more damage and misery on the Earth than North Korea. Guess the U.S is just filling the media with fake facts about North Korea

Anyways, North Korea is under a dictators rule, DICTATOR=ADOLF HITLER=EVIL SCUMBAG

If hitler had nukes, he would kill ALL OF US.

The US had plenty of nukes, but did we abuse our nuclear power after WWII When we were still the only ones with nukes? Hell no!

So the question is, Kuname, Would you give Adolf Hitler nukes?

It was actually really scary how close they where to having them :eek:hmy:

And as far as USA right to hold nuclear weapons

The tecnology is out there and they will never go away and i think it is just a good thing that the worlds largest military powers have them it is what is keeping the peace.

Who here thinks that the cold war would have stayed cold if nuclear weapons would not have existed ?

It was close to going hot anyway even with the treath of mutual destruction.

Quote from an Ozzy Ozbourne song.

Thank god for the bomb ( listen to the lyrics if you have not, I could not agree more )

Umm.

I think you kids are struggling to remember the fact that, you know, the dictator of North Korea is a complete nutjob who opresses his own people, leaving them to starve and suffer. And the fact that he's mentally unstable and his child is no exception doesn't really make a very good case for them either.

So, just in case you children wanted to throw out anymore silly opinions of yours I thought you might want to take that into consideration.

Nashy (as himself)

I doubt it, people are born into that fantasy land and they seem to enjoy it (those shown to us anyway).

As for nukes I think their overrated, perhaps it's in the interest of some other countries not to hype biological warfare.

When was the last time Korea did anything to U.S.A? No country in the world should have nuclear weapons. But what I don't get is that is the U.S has been in so many wars and CAUSED so many wars and the world still trust the U.S with nuclear nukes? What makes Bush different from Hitler?

So why trust America with nuclear nukes?

And No, I wouldn't give Hitler Nuclear nukes. Kim Jong Il and Hitler are two different people with different goals.

(By the way, I'm not on Korea's side)

Can we go back a bit?

You don't suppose these bombs are a way to draw attention away from something else?
It could be there's an evil plan afoot that nobody has noticed yet, because of these nukes?

I wish you were right about Bush; he should have blown up a couple of giant Marketplaces and killed about 3,000 innocent civilians with suicide bombers. That would have been far worse than having suicide bombers blow up two measley ex-world record holding towers that were also the center of the EVIL American stock market, while killing 3,000 American civilians in the process. I wish he was a genocidal maniac who exterminated 10,000,000 people because of his own beliefs, and I wish he worshipped a plus sign with legs. But no, he only killed a few tenthousand mass murderors at the cost of around 10,000 our super evil and super mean soldiers who play soccer with innocent children and spread the word about democracy. Now excuse me while I go smoke some crack and sing about the wonders of Socialism, ok?
