Excellent choices (and maybe a better list than the ones in the Western movie poll). I'd have to add an older movie or two though. High Noon, Rio Bravo, etc. I'd have a hard time to limiting myself to 5 though. I think Unforgiven would have to be there though.

Unforgiven

Yea Unforgiven is a good one and Pale Rider has also some attitude.

Pale Rider has also some attitude.
:)

And the best axe handle fight in cinematic history! I also love Christopher Penn. I don't think he has a huge number of fans, but I'm one of them.

One thing Wyatt Earp has going for it over Tombstone: Michael Madsen.

Put those two together and you have another reason Reservoir Dogs was a great movie: both of them. I was a fan of both before I ever saw it.

Well I haven't got a top 5 but two very good modern ones are:
Ride with the devil (Eljah woods)
Wild Wild West (A bit far-fetched but oh well haha)

Blazing Saddles (Mel Brooks)

I can't believe I forgot to mention it. An underrated Western comedy is The Villian, with Kirk Douglas and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Rustler's Rhapsody of course. Lust in the Dust. Goin' South with the late great John Belushi. But then again, there was also Wagons East with the late great John Candy, which was a horrible movie.

How could I forget The Terror of Tiny Town?

Western Movies

Just saw the post and had to come in with Wild Bunch but Lorgos beat me to it! :p

Other greats and fun ones to check out...

The Searchers
Red River
The Cowboys
Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid
A Fist Full of Dollars
Silverado
Dances with Wolves
Lonesome Dove

I could go on and on with this subject - love them weterns!

Despite where some of the classics have unrealistic western lifestyles and exploit the image of Native Americans they are still indelible Americana (sorry for a little seriousness but felt compelled to mention it).

But I guess I'll just say there are some actors/directors where you really can't go very wrong by checking out their films. And for me these are:

John Ford
John Wayne
Clint Eastwood
James Stewart
Gregory Peck

Oh and growing up for me it was also TV! Bonanza and Big Valley specifically but also re-runs of The Rifleman. And the books! Louis Lamour all the way - and some of the movies made from them (Hondo, Shane)... OK enough from me - getting off subject. :D

[edit - doggone it Lorgos had already said Red River too~!]

Hmmm, there are so many good ones!

I would have to say...

1. The Magnificent Seven (best movie ever, stellar cast, wonderful music score)
2. Big Jake (My favorite John Wayne I think)
3. The Man who shot Liberty Valance (great one, I love Jimmy Stewart in this)
4. High Noon (Nice song with it, but I'm not a big Gary Cooper fan)
5. Rio Bravo (With Dean Martin, Ricky Nelson, Walter Brennan and John Wayne, this was a cool movie.

Thats all I can think of...

There must be more, but then I would have to go to 10, or maybe 15....

I'm pretty partial in general to the more modern ones, but some of the classics are some of my favorites.

2) A Fistful of Dollars
3) Dances with Wolves
4) Hang 'em High
5) The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
