James is sitting in his office. He puts his black hat on the desk and puts his feet up on it. "Damnit so boring. Well, no hard work I guess. Got some Chinese working for fair wages. This is all ok I guess," he thought. He pulled out a cigar and lit it. He was marshal of this town, and so he was the law. Hell, his reputation as an extension of the law was why nobody pulled anything funny. If anybody did, they'd know they would be killed entirely.

James smoked the cigar and then thought,"Sooner or later, you gotta settle down old boy. Your sixty years old!!! Maybe there's a girl who'll fall in love with you here. Oh well. Only time's gonna tell." James started to snooze as the day went on.

(Here goes nothing)

After a long, and dusty three months, and half of his group dying from dysentry, Rolf and a few of his friends had arrived at the new mining sites. They see a promising bend in the river, and roll over to set up. When they arrive, a scruffy guy in a wagon rides up to them, going full speed. The German-Americans get out of the way, just in time, before the wagon goes out of control and falls over right where they were, dumping a few boxes downriver, and rendering the wagon useless, except for firewood. "Get out of my campsite!" the scruffy American says. "We were here first, sir, but we can help you move your equipment to another place if you want to." Johann and Gunter were already diving in the river to get the fallen boxes. Scruffy looked surprised. "Well, uh ok." He looked around. "Down the river a bit, there's another bend. Let's set up there." Rolf nodded, and they all moved Scruffy over to another bend, but had to cross the river many times. "There. All done. Thank you for cooperating." The German-Americans waved goodbye, and started setting up their camp.

Qiuyue lowered her pack to the ground and tried to ignore the pain that shot through the muscles of her back. She had been walking since the dawn and the site of town had nearly brought her to tears. Town wasn't much of a description for the few buildings and tents that stood in the clearing but she was happy to finally come to her destination.

She left her pack in the shade of some trees and walked about to see if she could find someone in charge of the town. She wanted to set up her business. She wanted to make money... She wanted to control her own destiny. Where to start?

There was an office with a Star on the sign. She knew that it meant law. She only hoped that the law would be on her side here.

She walked into the doorway and saw the man asleep in his chair, a line of drool just starting down toward his chin.

Moving closer she poked him in the upper part of his arm. Once... nothing... twice... nothing...

"You law man?" She poked him a third time. "Wake up law man... wake up!"

Name: Coyote Moon

Age: Early 20's (Indians don't count their years)

Story: Worked as a Navajo scout for the Army, during their wars with the Apache. Now the war is over, he's got nothing to do.

Description: Indian. Fairly short; black hair and brown eyes. Wears Indian leggings, a loincloth, moccasins, and a feather in his hair.

Reason for taking the journey: They hired him because he knows the land.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Coyote strolled into town, passing a few White men with strange accents. He knew that the building with the bars would be the Sheriff's office, so he went in.

The Sheriff was asleep, and there was a White girl trying to wake him up. "That is not how you wake White man up," he told her; and then shook the Sheriff by his shoulders.

As the Sheriff woke up, Coyote looked over at Qiuyue. She had white skin, but she didn't look like the other white women. Then he realized that she was terrified of him. "Do not be scared. I am not here to make war," he told her.

The sky was completely black, the thunder boomed, and the rain continued to beat mercilessly against the earth. The graveyard wasn't the first place Virginia wanted to be, but the stagecoach was leaving in only a quarter hour. She placed the last rose over her father's grave, and leaned her head back exposing her face, willing herself not to cry as her tears mingled with the rain. A fresh life would soon be hers, and the secrets and heartbreak of Jacksonville would become a history. She tried to avoid the mud as she walked down the graveyard path. She closed the creaking gate behind her, and walked down to the next street where the stagecoach was supposed to stop. This would take her through most of Kansas, and then she would have to take a second one to Colorado. She could hear the horses and wheels clattering in the distance. She did her best to brush off her soaked dress and pushed her wet hair back under her hat. The driver jumped down and opened the door for her, as he took her luggage. She thanked the man and sat down on the bench. She removed her wet hat, and ran her fingers through her slightly tangled curls. It was only then that she realized she was not alone. A man, dressed completely in black from his shoes to his hat was sitting across from her. He had two pistols in his holster and he looked as fearsome as the storm raging outside. He didn't say a word; he just sat there looking at her with his piercing dark eyes. . .
