and by what action do you judge your statement kanishka? he really hasent done anything yet
Hmmmm...I appreciate that it is very early days, and to that extent you are right. Furthermore, whilst as a socialist (of sorts) I cannot deny the fact that the US electing a black president is a genuinely great thing to have done. I also know that he is from a fairly privileged background and in my little red book, class is more important than race as a determinant of the lengths Obama will go in bringing about real reform. BUT (you knew it was coming) lets examine what he
hasn't done since taking up the presidency;
* Starting an illiegal and unjust war, resulting in the deaths of tens of thousands of innocent civilians, as well as the hundreds of young American men and women who were sent out there (often ill-equipped - not that I am advocating increasives in military spending)
* Stupidly making a link between Bin Laden and Sadam
hmy:
* Getting it constantly wrong on the internantional stage and declaring a so-called "war on terror" (and ultimately bringing about a more terrifying world
* Stitching-up post war reconstruction contracts to his buddies
* Jump-in with protectionism in the current economic crisis and announce whole-sale embargoes on foreign products (particularly steel - remember?). Although there have been some worrying noises being made in Obama's asministration
* Announcing huge tax cuts for the wealthiest in America
* Allocating the smallest sums for education (and in fact freezing funding on many much-needed education projects) and instuting a massively over-bloated Medicare scheme which oftern fails to deliver even the most basic of healthcare to the poorest
* Abandoning Kyoto agreements
* Bringing in legislation that in fact contributes to environmental disasters
So, at least Obama hasn't done any of the above as yet. However, clearly time will tell, but I personally am glad that Bush has gone (even though I am British) and I place some hope in the new president. But, as long as capitalism is the economic and political system that underpins the world, I guess that not much will ever change...
