You're Hispanic but you don't speak English (your English sounds fine to me) or Spanish? Brazilian? I don't think they're considered "Hispanic" since their ancestors aren't from Spain. The UN's geographical regions do call all of Central and South America and the Caribbean to be "Latin America", but that wouldn't make them Hispanic.

Sorry, I'm just curious what your native language is. Your English is better than a lot of Americans I know. ;)

I'm not sure where you get your information, but you're way way off.

Which part? I've studied geography and history for 20+ years, including a Latin American Studies class at the University of Texas. Where do you get your information? If you're going to dispute me, tell me specifically what you're disputing or don't waste your time.

Sorry that I missed this one. I was referring to the fact that when I did my PHD work (Spanish, by the way) at a Big 10 University, the Spaniards (I mean literally Spain, here) there weren't allowed, on their paperwork, to list themselves as "Hispanic," even though they were from Spain, which, as you say, is the root word for our adjective "Hispanic."

They could have been wrong, as could I, as the document below, Table 2, shows "Spaniard 0.3%" as an option for immigration as defined under Hispanic. Well, the administration at that university was certainly racist...Wouldn't surprise me that they did it just to avoid paying money.

Well, one thing is that you say the above, yet you also said this:

The UN's geographical regions do call all of Central and South America and the Caribbean to be "Latin America", but that wouldn't make them Hispanic.

Don't you see the contradiction?

Hi, just read this thread, and Elmyr's post. No, sorry dcgincc, I don't see the contradiction. Latin America includes regions that do not have Hispanics, therefore you could be Latin American, but not Hispanic, as Elmyr inferred.

Anyway, I'm Latin. ;)
