Yup, it's true so the probability is based solely on the player itself rather than the whole group which would make sense otherwise it would have been 25% chance for 4 vs 4 and so on..
Your maths only works if there is a 100% chance that one loot chest will be rewarded to the victorious team and each player has an equal chance of winning said chest. I believe fos meant that there is a 20% chance that one loot chest will be rewarded to the victorious team which - assuming that there is an equal chance for each player to win - gives each team member a 4% chance in a 5 vs. 5 game, a 5% chance in a 4 vs. 4 game and a 6.67% chance in a 3 vs. 3 game.
Either way, you're correct that the number of players on a team would influence the drop rate, it's just the numbers that differ. I think we can accept the fact that each player has their own 20% chance to win a loot chest, as that's the only way it's written in any official documents.
