You have to accept the quest before it counts any of your work.

Trading is completely different from Trading with Indians. If it's the 2nd case, countdown only starts after work is finished when the quest was accepted in the 1st place.

Last week i was able to find trading with indians in my mini map.....but today i looked it up to see how many more labour points i needed & it has gone....can anyone help to explain how this has happened please

when with equipment that gives you bonuses towards the job you will get nearer to unlocking it. At about 100LP from that point you can see it. I'm guessing that the second time you looked it was with clothes that dont give you bonuses towards it.
