It depends on how you're specced (assumingly for jobs, not dueling). I'm assuming you don't need to be told to adjust your stance after you see where you're missing and he's hitting (although I guess I just told you anyway). Generally, appearance and aim gear is a good choice for non-duelers, but, like I said, it depends on your skills. You definitely want the best precise or sharp weapon for your level, unless you're using the full charlatan's set, but you have two levels to go for the shoes.
