I don't know how widespread this practice is but clearly it is a problem with the way that anyone in town can see how much cash someone else has on their person at any time.
I never keep so much money on me but made the mistake of finishing the "Kate's Wedding Band (The Thief)" quest while I was out of town which nets you $1200 and 600 exp. I had a little over an hour left on my current job so I left it at that and set my character to walk back to town after the job was done so I could deposit the money. Low and behold I come back 2 hours later and it appears that some low-life piece of poop in my town tipped off members of another town that I had money on me and I was attacked by around a dozen people.
Now, this isn't a matter of people telling me "well, don't carry so much cash" or some other idiotic advice. That much is clear. The issue is clearly that someone in my town probably has an arrangement with someone in another town to tip each other off as to who is carrying a lot of money on them at any time. Only management of the town should be able to tell how much money someone has on them at any time. There is no other purpose to this. If someone wants to see how much money someone has donated, that's fine, but also unnecessary.
This also was not a coincidence. For several weeks now I have only been attacked by one other person and that is it. Now I have $1200 on my and suddenly get attacked by a dozen people? Give me a break...
