"You have a barrel of oil, and you need to measure out just one gallon. How do you do this if you only have a three-gallon container and a five-gallon container?"

You fill up the 5 gallon container then use that to fill up the three gallon container.

This leaves you with 2 gallons in the 5 gallon container.

Dump the 3 gallon container out. Pour the remaining 2 gallons into the 3 gallon container.

fill the 5 gallon container up, then use it to fill up the 3 gallon container.

This leaves you with 4 gallons in the 5 gallon container.

Dump the 3 gallon container out. Then use the 4 gallons in the 5 gallon container to fill the 3 gallon container up.

You are now left with 1 gallon in the 5 gallon container.

OR conversely

you can fill the 3 gallon container up.

Then dump that into the 5 gallon container.

Then fill the 3 gallon container up again.

And use that to fill up the remaining 2 gallons in the 5 gallon container.

Leaving you with 1 gallon in the 3 gallon container.
