Has our modern society diminished issues regarding suffering?

A lots of charities in the modern century never end up helping the poor kids and the media try and make us feel sympathy for the poor nations and the only way to help them is by travelling there and handing out the charity yourself.

I think the most successful models for helping people use the micro-loan system. That and empowering women in a society. That is a very powerful combination for promoting change - for stimulating an economy and creating opportunities for people to create long term economic independence.

Yeah, micro credit.. Give people who have nothing even less. Not all is positive about micro credits. Look at where credits have taken half of Europe..

Besides, many people in 3rd world countries can't even accept them because muslims aren't allowed to borrow money against interest.

No it isn't a perfect system by any means - but at least it provides opportunities for education and economic self-sufficiency... that is better than simple charity. I certainly don't know what the answers are - but often charitable organizations cause more harm than good. People who come in from other countries and don't understand a culture can really make a mess. So certainly empowering people so that they can make their own way is one way to help that should be given serious consideration. What else do you propose then?

The real problem is with the local corrupt governments in these places like Ethiopia and other developing nations. The reason why these people cannot feed themselves in most cases, is the government has taken their land away and that was how they were surviving before. You take primitive tribes who live off the land and you develop on their land, and force them into cities, and wonder why they cannot feed themselves.
