GREETINGS, COMRADES...

It is November of 1942. Two massive armies are converging on the glorious city of Stalingrad. The German army has captured 90% of the ruined city, forcing the Soviets into a corner. The Soviets have been divided and cut off from supplies. However, they are beginning a massive counterattack, with the potential to turn the tide of the battle.

This battle will become one of the bloodiest in the history of mankind, and will decide the outcome of the war, and ultimately of the world. Should the Germans win, they will be able to advance southward to secure the oil fields of Caucasus, and quench the Wehrmacht's desperate thirst for oil. The loss of Stalin's namesake will deal a great blow to Soviet morale, and if the Germans get their oil, Moscow will almost certainly fall. If the Soviets win, they will be able to continue their counterattack, reverse the direction of the war in their favor.

This where you come in. Your task is to create a squad of the faction of your choice. I recommend that you start with a basic infantry squad. Unlike in most other war RPs, your characters are expendable, so it is very unlikely that you will keep the same squad through the entire battle. As the game goes on, I will allow you to play as different units. Add extra machine guns, snipers or flamethrowers, or even play as a tank or aircraft crew. Use your imagination!

Here's a basic character sheet:

Country: Soviets are Soviets. Most Axis units in the battle were German, but Italians, Romanians, Hungarians and Croatians also fought.
Squad type: Infantry, specialized, armored, what have you.
Squad members: Names, roles and weapons. If you run out of names, that's OK, just forget about it.

Partially for example and partially because I can't decide, I'll create a German and Soviet squad each for myself.

Ivanov lead his men through the broken streets. He held his weapon close to him, as if he were protecting it. He was careful to lead his men through only the thickest cover. The machinegunners up in the high buildings didn't care who's side you were on. If you were out in the open, you died, regardless of whose uniform you were wearing. Leapfrogging in and out of cover, he expected to be shot at any given moment. The enemy was everywhere, and he knew it. He would die for the Motherland, whether he wanted to or not.

He led his men into a building, and after a short investigation, was pleased to find no sign of any Germans inside. His men braced themselves inside, weapons pointed at the streets below, waiting for Axis troops to show up. Despite the prevalent roar of machine guns and artillery that never seemed to cease, the place seemed eerily quiet.

karl raised his MP40 to his shoulder and watched for any signs of movement in the are. seeing none, he signalled his men to move forward, under the watchful eyes of stefan, meinhard and albrecht, karl and his men dashed across the street and into the remains of a shop. there was a pile of rotten apples on the floor, erwin began to search through them in an attempt to find one that was still edible.

Nikita and his men were lucky. The fascist pigs hadn't noticed them. He heard them run past his squad that was hiding in the building diagonally across the street from the ruined shop. Unfortunately the shop had a back room and a back door.

"ZA RODINU!!!" Nikita screamed as he jumped out of the building and opened fire on the Germans. He saw Kruglikov next to himself also shooting.

Ahmetov had emptied his clip. He run past them and hit his bayonet into the chest of one of the two unlucky Germans next to the door. He hit the other one in the head with the stock of his rifle several times. Nothing but a bloody mess remained of the German's face. Žuravljuk had made it next to him by that time. Both of them jumped towards the counter which several Germans used for cover. They were torn to pieces by the Germans' gunfire. So were Sergejev and Medvedjev who were next to jump into the store. Sergejev didn't die right away and Nikita was horrified by his dying screams. A machine gun could do terrible things to a man, specially at such a short distance.

Grigorjev threw a grenade behind the counter but it was thrown back in the middle of the squad. Fjodorov jumped on it to save all their lives. And splatter his insides all over the street. Nikita was feeling sick. It seemed to him that the soldiers wanted to start the next charge but Nikita stopped them: "We achieve nothing by just dying. We need to think here."

karl looked up as soon as he heard the soviet bloodcry, he saw a squad of soviets charging into the shop viktor and lukas were both killed in brutal melee combat whilst the rest of the section took cover behind the shop's counter and opened fire, severa l soviets were torn to peices. a grenade landed behind the counter, erwin picked it up and threw it back towards the soviets, one of the communists threw himself onto the grenade and was blown to smithereens. the russians stopped charging and took cover behind a pile of rubble in the street (i know that you didn't actually say that you took cover, but i assumed that's what you would do. if you want it changed then just tell me.) meanwhile, unknown to the soviets, stefan, meinhard and albrecht were still in the house on the other side of the street. and they had the MG. "shoot anything that moves behind that pile of rubble!" karl ordered.

Nikita stopped and took cover behind the rubble. He removed the empty clip from his weapon and replaced it with a new one. As he chambered the first round he said: "Alright, this is what we're gonna do. Chugun and Krug..." Nikita heard a command shouted in German and at the next moment a machine gun burst ripped Konev's head off. "TAKE COVER!"

Nikita lit up a Molotov cocktail and threw it towards the machine gun. The fire stopped. But had the crew retreated to a back room or burned? Nikita didn't know. The building was on fire. "Suka! Alright let's assume these guys are dead and continue with my plan. Chugun and Kruglikov, on my mark run to the other side of the store. I will cover you. When you are told, throw all your Molotov's and grenades into the shop. Me, Grigorjev and Dõgalo will do the same. That will kill the damned fascists or smoke them out. Understood?" The men nodded. "Alright then," Nikita sticked his gun around the corner and as he pulled the trigger he yelled: "RUN NOW!" Chugun and Kruglikov made it safely to the other side. Nikita's squad was ready and on positions. If the machine gunners were alive they would've made excellent targets.

Ivanov observed as what was a relatively peaceful scene a few seconds ago erupted into chaos. "Don't just stand there, cowards!", he demanded. "Fire!" His squads rifles opened up, and more blood poured into the streets. Kosgrov spotted a German MG team inside a building, and Ataev swung the DP around, surprising the Germans with a stream of fire. One was hit several times, his body erupting into a fountain of blood. His partner dove for cover, chased by Ataev's bullets.

karl saw a molotov cocktail being thrown into the house where the MG team was. nobody was hurt. after a few short seconds, a bunch of grenades and molotovs were thrown into the shop, the majority of them either missed or got thrown back, but one molotov exploded right next to dieter, who was set on fire, still on fire, dieter ran out of the shop and into a russian soldier who was set alight. but before the section could concentrate on returning fire, a bunch of hidden soviets opened up. meinhard was killed instantly, whilst stefan and albrecht managed to get to cover. steffan was also shot. as soon there was a lull in the firing, karl gave the order to retreatout of the shop, as the remains of the section moved towards the back door, stefan and albrecht charged across the street, stefan was gunned down, but albrecht just about made it, and with that, the section retreated out of the shop and into the back yard.

Nikita was about to charge into the store when a German soldier in flames run to him and he also caught fire. He screamed because of the excrutiating pain and didn't notice that Grigorjev and Dõgalo were killed by the German machine gun before it was silenced by the other Red Army squad. He also didn't notice Kruglikov rushing through the shop and that he was gunned down by the Germans before shooting two of them. With his dying breath Nikita hoped that the remainder of his squad would live, see the end of the war, raise families and help rebuild Mother Russia.

Michael felt the weight of the leather coat on his shoulders. Why does it have to be so damn cold in this stupid country. Klaus was pouring water into the radiator of the Panzer IV. Stupid liquid-cooled engines. If you left the water into the engine for the night it would freeze and crack the block and make the engine useless. But what could he do. Klaus was breathing on his fingers. "All filled up." he reported. Michael looked at him and said: "Well fire her up then." Ten seconds later he could hear the roar of the three hundred horsepowers of the engine. They couldn't move out yet. The oil was also almost frozen so if they'd move the engine would probably be cooked in a matter of minutes.

Michael lit a cigarette. He enjoyed smoking it and lit another one after that. His men were also out smoking. Who knows when they can have their next ciggy. Who knows if they can have one at all. Klaus was sitting on the engine cover and said: "Why the hell does it have to be so cold in this damn country." Michael looked at him and frowned. As Klaus threw away his cigarette butt a snowball hit him on the head. "Why you..." he shouted at Werner, the thrower. He jumped off the engine cover and started to chase Werner, who took refuge in the tank. Klaus followed through the drivers hatch. Michael, Max and Heinz were laughing when they heard Klaus's voice: "Motor is at working temperature." Michael sighed and said: "Man your stations." Michael also climbed in and the tank drove of to the direction from where gunfire was heard and where Karl and his squad were probably in trouble.

karl emptied the clip of his MP40 into the remainder the soviet squad before ducking down behind a pile of crates in the back yard to reload. his section took up similar positions.
"we need back up!" karl shouted. he heard armour tracks in the distance and hoped that the tank was german, he would be seriously screwed if it was russian.

OCC: yuggernaut, just for future reference, when you start a tank squad, could you specify what type of tank it is? I can tell it's a Panzer IV from the post, but saying it up front would make it easier. By the way, I don't think tank crews were commonly armed with anything more than handguns.

Ivanov looked around the building. "Nobody dead yet", he thought. "Good". Gazing back out the window, he saw that the German army had just shrunk slightly in numbers. His squad's ambush was successful so far. He heard the distinctive roar of German diesel engines in the distance, and it was getting louder. He hoped they weren't coming in his direction. His fears were realized when a platoon of Panzer IVs came into view. He ordered his squad to cease fire, and hoped that the German armor wouldn't notice him.

While sitting there, Dimitri VI notices a cupcake a couple of feet up the road. He gets up and heads to the cupcake, but as soon as he touches it, BAM! The cupcake is smashed by a sniper bullet from a germany sniper. Dimitri VI quickly runs back into the hole crying about his cupcake. The Squad stay down inside the deep hole and try and hide from the sniper.

After 5minutes they guess, one of the squad mates put their helmet on a stick and raise it up slowly to see if it will get shot, it did. BAM the helmet flew off the stick, but Dimitri II could tell where the sniper was from the angle of the sniper shot. So Dimitri I gets his Katyusha Rocket launcher Ready, stands up real quick, and fires the rocket at where he guess the sniper was, he was there. BOOM! The sniper blows up and his body parts rain to the ground.

Dimitri II raising his arms with a smile on him, but next thing that he knows, gets SHOT by a second sniper. He falls to the ground dead with a whole right between his eyes,a perfect shot. The Squad quickly grabs his stuff and runs into a nearby house.

In the house, they knew they were going to stay for a while, so they went upstairs, pushed a couch upstairs down the stairs to block it. They also found a ladder up stairs so they set it near the window for when they have to leave.

They all heard a rumbling of engines, guessing it was Germany tank's they all huddled near the middle but Dimitri III, who was barely looking out the window holding his sniper rifle closely to him. As he was, he saw what looked like another Russian squad in a building before they went out of view.

(arrgh! i'm outnumbered!)

karl raised his head up above the pile of crates and looked around for russians, he couldn't see any, but he knew that they'd all be hidden in the ruined buildings. karl didn't know what to do, if the section stayed here, then who knows what would happen, but if he moved into the street, he and his section would be dead within seconds. he looked around for an exit out of the shop's back yard, there was none. they would be stuck there until reinforcements arrived.

(OOC: tigermite, but we have a tank Anyway to my understanding MP40 was a common tank crew weapon. And I might be wrong but didn't German tanks use petrol engines (and the Soviet ones diesels)?)

"Halt" Michael felt the tank stop. He could see lots of bodies on the road. And they seemed to have died recently (recently as in the last few minutes). Michael quickly got into the tank and closed the hatch. "Klaus back up a bit." There had to be someone here. Judging by the bodies that included some German infantry. But they were hiding so there had to be some Soviets as well. Michael examined the street. The Reds had to be somewhere. There! He saw the end of a rifle barrel through a broken window. Russians.

"Max. Frag round. Werner and Heinz. That house on the right of the street. On my mark give them hell." Michael hoped that the Reds think they hadn't been noticed. He heard Max's voice: "Frag ready." Michael grinned. That would teach these communists a lesson. "Fire at will." The firing cannon shook the tank. Michael heard the hull MG firing. He thought that he saw at least three separate hands and one body with both hands flying out of the building. At the beginning of the war such sight would have made him sick. Not anymore. He couldn't feel almost anything anymore.

(OOC or OCC or whatever: The Soviet engines where indeed diesel, but I remember reading that part of the reason for Germany's defeat was that their diesel engines wouldn't start in the cold weather. Maybe it's my memory playing tricks on me. Anyway, MP40s were primarily issued to NCOs and Fallschirmjäger. They couldn't spare any for tank crews.)

Ivanov saw the Germans falling underneath him, and was exceptionally confident. Just when the last of the Germans seemed to be down, tank rounds burst into the side of the building, sending bricks and flesh spraying over the street. Ivanov himself was uninjured, but when he looked back, he saw much of his squad decimated. He searched around for AT weapons, but found none. As his squad was sprayed with fire from the tank's hill MG, he found himself with no choice but to pull his squad out of the building. He knew going out into the streets would be suicide, but he reasoned that he would rather die quickly by machine gun than slowly crushed under the rubble.
