Don`t listen him.
You can get whiskey from Mercenary work but you probably need it for adventurer quest so click on your saloon, then click on Mugridge and he`ll give you a sub-quest which will require you to bring him 3 grains and he`ll give you a bottle of whiskey.

Also I forgot to mention that you can visit west stats to check all quests that will be available to your character, all job info, all items that exist and stuff like that.
