Thats the 1st time I've seen that one , the only thing I can think of is that they leveled either in real levels , or in dueling level in the process of the duel taking them out of the top of your rangehmy:

yep i think thats what happened, when I checked the saloon again I couldnt duel him any more...
and cos I was in a rush I pressed the wrong button and deleted!

No did, thats just one where the guy who you are going to duel is sleeping in a hotel when you tried to duel him. It's quite common if you duel frequently.

Maybe its because when you queued many jobs
and by the time you dueled him, he quit!

And for the first post, that had happened quite a few times to me

When you queued some duels
The first two got over and ur dueling level increased, then the players level was too low
