The Return

The huge spacecraft dropped out of FTL Flight without so much as a whisper of noise to announce its presence. Its hull a dull gray, along with the rest of the ship, it was nothing pretty to look at, however it was of great use to its occupants, who had travelled halfway across the universe, to this desolate and remote corner of the cosmos, known as the Milky Way. No ships had ever travelled through this place and none had ever come out, which was exactly why the ship’s occupants had journeyed such a long way.

Deep inside the twisting metallic corridors of the ship, the control light to a computer that had been on standby for 42 years began to flash and the computer’s electronic brain began to initiate its predetermined function. A cryogenic chamber suddenly began to release the air it had built up, as the rest of the ship was aired to capacity as well. With a hiss and a slow popping sound, the block of ice began to melt and did so for many minutes, before the naked figure of a man was lying in a puddle of water upon the floor of the chamber. The long dormant computer began to operate, slowly reanimating the naked man’s figure, until his consciousness returned and he once again knew who he was.

Jack Reus, 26 animate years old, his home world was Protheus, a rock barely fit for living conditions. Jack’s entire life slowly began to return to him, his childhood on Protheus, the day his father had sent him away, due to lack of food, to a school three galaxies away, his first love, joining the scientific sub group of the Galactic Governing Body known as FARE and being shipped to this dead Solar system. Suddenly Jack’s mind remembered what FARE was, Finding and Reanimating Old Earth. What a joke, Jack’s mind laughed, as his atrophied muscles tried to engage sufficiently to lift his small frame from the floor, Old Earth is more of a fairy tale than anything else.

Finally, through a huge force of will, Jack hauled himself to a sitting position inside his Cryogenic Chamber and looked around the Cryogenics Room. Many people were frozen in the same kind of chambers as he; after all, if they were to explore the universe for Old Earth, the occupants of the ship could not die of old age before they got there. There were men and women among the crew of the Space Craft they had dubbed “Groaner”, for the sound each and every crew member had made the moment they heard about their field mission, each of them were top minds in one field or another, with one exception there were absolutely no weapon experts or weapons of any kind on Groaner, the reason behind this was the unfortunate “Incidents” previous FARE Forays into uncharted territories, bad press was bad for everyone associated with the organization.

Jack slowly lurched to his feet, having to pause to catch his breath, supporting his weight on the metal handlebar protruding from the side of his Cryogenic Chamber. He scoffed at the sign that hung above his Cryo unit, it read “Home Sweet Home” someone had a cruel sense of humor aboard this ship. Slipping on feet that had not moved in forty two years, Jack Reus slowly made his way to the computer console and began to go about his duty, unthawing the others. After he hit the controls and began the laborious unfreezing process, Jack got to his feet once more and stumbled to one of many lockers arranged about the Cryogenics Room. From within he withdrew some underwear and a black form fitting jumpsuit. Jack frowned when he thought about the way the jumpsuits had been tight across well honed muscles when they began the voyage and how his muscles were now nonexistent. It was a tough job getting into the clothes, but Jack managed it.

Going back to his chair in front of the computer console, Jack slowly pecked at buttons, setting up the exercise routines, as the others unthawed and slowly came to life. Each crew member would have to begin their work out slowly with a 100 yard walk three times a day for two weeks, before they could move up to a 200 yard walk for another two weeks, then they would be allowed to commence running and upper body workouts that would put them all into Planet side shape in no time, however it was extremely unlikely that they would ever leave the ship, Old Earth was a myth and nothing more.

NOW HEAR THIS!

This is purely an exploratory RP; there will be no violence of any kind towards each other. No weapons either, these people are scientists, not Mercenaries.

Biography:

Name: Jack Reus
Age: 26 Animate Years, 42 Cryogenic Years
Home World: Protheus
Expertise: (Dual Expertise) Linguist and Recovery of Old Technology
Personality: Exploratory
Biography: Born on the rock known as Protheus, Jack Reus had to contend with others for the food he and his family had to have, this gave Jack a dull view on people in general from a young age and since then, his thoughts haven’t improved a great deal on them. However, with each piece of evidence he sees, Jack secretly prays for a world untouched by the ravages of the new kind of humanity.

At the age of 10, Jack’s father had finally saved enough to send his only child away from Protheus and to a school in the most settled Galaxy, something that permanently scarred the young Jack in a way few children have to endure. As Jack Reus grew older, his adventurous spirit grew, but so did his inner resentment of his family, who, as young Jack saw it, threw him away.

Jack excelled at learning languages, even from a young age, when he began learning Sign Language from a deaf boy who was his roommate. In fact, Jack became so good at language that when he graduated from school at 23 he was commissioned by FARE and began his work there, learning the languages of this so called “Old Earth”. Chinese, Japanese and Russian were his first languages, but he believed they were all a load of bull shoveled down from some eccentric General or Senate Member.

Now Jack is as far away from FARE HQ as possible, in a forgotten and long ago abandoned corner of the Universe known as the Milky Way.

Name: Mika Ito

Age: 29 Animate Years, 42 Cryogenic Years

Home World: Abante

Expertise: Botanist and Surgeon

Personality: Caregiver

Biography: Mika was born and raised on Abante, a planet of constant humidity and unending flora. She lived in an encased city-state, but often wandered out in the jungles to familiarize herself with all manner of plants. She attended university for Botany, and transitioned into the medical field for her graduate studies, hoping to blend botanical cures into practical medical applications. While on rotations, she fell in love with surgery, and switched her graduate studies to surgery. When she graduated, top of her class, she was approached by FARE. Her unique duality of Botanical knowledge, and more practical surgical skills were perfect to act as the team's medic. She accepted, climbed onto the "Groaner", and the rest is present.

Mika's first sensation was of her chest rising and falling, which caused her eyes to flutter open as she realized she was moving. She sat up slowly, groaning as her muscles rebelled. She lifted her arms weakly and stretched languidly. She rolled onto her side and kind of slithered out of the cryogenic pod, finding herself lacking the strength to actually climb out.

She was a diminutive figure, standing barely over five feet, and quite average in comparison to other females from her planet of Abante. Her glossy black hair was cut at the shoulers, and her inquisitive brown eyes searched the chamber. She was the only one currently processed, and noticed others in several stages of unfreezing. She walked awkwardly over to her locker, grabbed her jumpsuit out of it and climbed into it slowly.

She exited the room and headed for mess. She was really thirsty. She wanted to make sure the other team members were coming out of hibernation as well as she seemed to have, but water was her key focus for now. She walked passed the control room, noticing Jack. She smiled and lifted her hand as she padded passed, looking very much like an old woman as she shuffled along on bare feet.

She found the mess, filled a cup and drank several gulps. She closed her eyes as her stomach lurched, but managed to keep everything in. She finished the remainder of the water slowly, and then went off to the medical bay. She announced her presence, and the computer acknowledged her name and authority as it began to activate vital care systems, which lay dormant for decades. She grabbed her medical bag and returned to the mess area to wait for others to begin waking.

Personality: reserved, sometimes a bit of an egotist, usually when describing his works
Biography: Herbert was born to a fun little family of 14 in the Free City of Newark in the country of Lastovakia, on the glorious planet of Triykon. Growing up, Herbert was always tinkering around with everything he could find, taking things apart, and putting them back together, figuring out how they worked. This developed into a life choice that, combined with an interest in old legends, got him on a boat to the drawers.

Name: Dante Cole
Age: 20 (closer 33 in Earth Years)
Home World: Nocturne
Expertise: Cybernetics and A.I.
Personality: Quiet, reserved and a bit of an outcast
Description: 5’9” very pale skin almost grey in colour, short black hair, his eyes are a pale yellow colour and his canines are slightly larger than a normal humans apart from that he appears to be human in every other respect
Biography: Born on the night world of Nocturne, Dante has suffered from the prejudices surrounding his home world all his life which has made Dante wary of the "Humans" from the other off-world colonies making him feel awkward in their company often resulting in him spending much of his time by himself. Officially cited as "Hybrid" Dante is almost a second class citizen and would normally be barred from the FARE however due to his expertise in the design, construction and operation of robotic equipment and the implementation of Artificial Intelligence in both civilian and military equipment he has been accepted on the mission where they hope his skills will come in handy.

-----------------------------------------------

Dante's eyes opened suddenly, the harsh light from the fluorescent bulbs made him wince his eyes weren’t used to such treatment he also noticed that there was a strong taste of copper at the back of his mouth, crawling from out of the pod he quickly scrabbled about the nearby locker pushing aside unwanted items as he searched for his contact lens. Finally finding them at the back he inserted them one at a time over his eyes the pigmented lens removing the harsh light allowing him to see without risking permanent damage to his highly sensitive eyes. He decided to deal with that coppery taste in his mouth but first he needed some clothes, climbing into the yellow technician’s jumpsuit he glanced around over in one corner he could see one of the medical staff heading off to her post he’d need to speak to her at some point, informing her of his medical conditions. Removing a syringe from his locker Dante proceeded to inject the contents into his arm within seconds the coppery taste in his mouth receded then disappeared entirely, that would keep him going for a couple of hours at least. Dante quickly finished changing into his jumpsuit, pulling a pair of boots on he noticed his reflection in the dress mirror fixed on the opposite wall. He’d lost weight that was for sure and skin was pale even by his standards however it was his eyes that caught his attention the most, two perfectly black orbs sat in his skull where normally his eyes would be…Great that’s all he needed these damn contacts made him look like an even bigger freak. He finished tying up the laces on his boots, then headed for the mess hopefully some sort of comfort food would be available.

Mika was in the mess area preparing protein shakes. The muscle loss of hibernation was her main task to overcome, and protein was the building block to start with. She grinned at Dante as he entered. She greeted him by saying, "Good morning, afternoon, or evening Mr. Cole. So nice to see you up and moving." She handed the thick blue concoction to him as she apologized, "I'm afraid nothing but liquid for now. None of us are ready for solids. Won't be too long thank all that's right."

She drank her own shake and made a face while shaking her head. "How are you feeling? Anything out of the ordinary?" Dante knew with her being the medical officer of the group, she had unhindered access to everything that made him who he was, but kept it all confidential as was his right. She asked, "Have you spoken with any of the others yet?"

Dante involunatarily jumped at Mika's friendly greeting he hadn't expected anyone to talk to him or at least not in a civil fashion. Flashing Mika a nervous smile he proceeded to stutter his own greeting "Hi...I mean morning.. I think ...um no nothing out of the usual not that i am particulary usual" Mika smiled politley as Dante struggled on, humour wasn't his strong point, nor was human interaction for that matter "Did you get my medical details about my...medicine?" his appointment to the project had been a whirl of last minute paperwork and interviews none of which was handled all that well he'd hate to think that his medicine had been left behind the side effects were rare but they also very extreme

As Jack sat at his computer monitor, watching his colleagues thaw and drop from their chambers, an alert flashed across the screen of his CP, informing him that the planets inside this solar system were now charted and available for viewing. Feeling guilty of watching a busty young woman, as she slowly woke, Jack looked down at his console and pulled up the screen and his jaw dropped to the floor. There, the third planet from the solar system's sun, it was the only possibility for the position of Old Earth in the system and it matched all the descriptions FARE had dug up over fifty years of existence.

The planet had an atmosphere, there was visible water on it's surface and better yet, there was green on the planet's land masses. As Jack was about to call out to the nearest member of the crew, the console in front of him beeped again and told him that there were visible satellites in orbit over the planet, but that none replied to any of the customary signals. Jack suddenly had a feeling that sent shivers up his back, my god, they had found it, Earth was real.

Jack stood and strode from the room, all traces of exhaustion gone and a look of amazement on his face. In his mind, Jack turned cartwheels. He was off to find two members of the crew, both placed in the cafeteria area. Both would be able to help him.

"Hey, I need your help." Jack said, as he opened the double doors to the cafeteria "We have a situation here."

Cold, why was he cold? He wasn't supposed to be cold, was he? Than it hit him, he was waking up from a hibernation, looks like they had made it to their destination. When the ice fully thawed, Herbert tried to walk over to his locker, but to no avail. He had to crawl there, and use handholds to get to his destination. Once his locker was open, on went his jumpsuit, a looser fitting model than the standard issue, Herbert hated the formfitted feel, and dropped a suitcase on the deck. Inside were white devices, two of them were like leg braces, the other two like gloves with thin poles sticking out of them, ending in another brace. The gloves went on his hand, the braces on his feet, and suddenly Herbert would walk better than anybody else on the ship.

It was off to the mess hall for Herbert, who was running there, assisted by his devices, which he created by the way, very clever, wasn't it? He was hungry, needed food, some fried chicken maybe. Yes, with potatoes and beans, and a glass of milk or whiskey to wash it all down. Herbert made it to the cafeteria, two people already there. Herbert gave a quick wave, and walked over to the selection. His request came up invalid, they wouldn't allow solids. Instead, his only legal option was to drink some blue stuff that had all necessary nutrients. No matter, there was alcohol in Herbert's work locker, he would drink later. As Herbert was enjoying his tasteless drink, he was interrupted by an enthusiastic man about discovering old Earth. "Great," Herbert replied, sounding uninterested. "Seat of power of the old Empire. Might find something good there."
