Syrian Uprising

Thoughts ? Syria is a can of worms stirred up and encouraged by Arab spring events in other nations leading certain groups in Syria to believe help would be forthcoming if they rose up like so many other countries in the region.

Unfortunately for the rebels its absolutely not what has happened and the breaks were put on assisting due to warnings from certain other large powers, namely China and Russia... its far too political atm. Its a tragedy but Syria is looking like its still bought and sold and the Assad regime has the backing of certain nations everyone would rather avoid getting into a tangle with.

You should'nt go arming people who you don't have a clue about anyway ( not that its unusual) and we have no clue whos worth backing or if they would act different if in power anyway. Syria is tribal and the second there is no dictatorial rule the place will devolve into a chaotic mess. It seems to be pretty much what other nations think too because no one wants to touch it and be left holding the baby.

What else to say

If the Arab League wont do anything about their own doorstep step away and let it be....

Both Braet,

If the Arab League wont touch it then it shows how messed up the place is. Isn't there a more than one rebel contingent meaning there are more than just two sides here the rebels are regional and separate no ? How to you get involved in that ? I think the current feeling is you cant without it turning into an even bigger mess.

There is no way to intervene with this place that will benefit anyone. In Libya there was an organised rebellion. They used tactics and pretty much won the battle on their own. We only needed to provide air support. Whereas here we would be asked to utilise as much military power as we can to support them. Whilst I don't like to see other people suffer, I don't see how sacrificing our own soldiers in what would only end in a long and drawn out affair is a good idea at all. Syria has to help itself before it can expect us to help. We can't go around the world getting rid of every dictator. We can support underdogs that wish to do so. But it is unrealistic to just keep entering countries to overthrow dictators constantly.

"Syria is bringing in snipers from Iran and Lebanon to help crush a resistance movement that continues to threaten President Bashar al-Assad's violent regime, reports The Times (via The Australian).
Mahmoud Haj Hamad, a senior Syrian government defector, told the newspaper that state security forces were importing the trained marksmen as "military consultants" to murder anti-government protestors, after the sharp-shooters successfully suppressed uprisings in their own countries"

Oh dear Victor, you really goofed up there. Try a little google before mouthing off next time.:D

Sigh* You mean this Mahmoud Haj Hamad ?

SYRIA is deploying large numbers of Hezbollah and Iranian snipers as "military consultants" to murder anti-regime protesters, a senior government defector has told The Times.
Mr Hamad said: "At the beginning there were hundreds, then when things started to get worse they started to bring in more outsiders. The numbers were huge - in the thousands."

The foreign reinforcements are prized by the regime for their street-fighting abilities, having crushed dissent in Iran and Lebanon.

Hamad continued that he has seen proof that Iran and Iraq are aiding the Syrian government's crackdown.

"The Syrian regime receives financial support from Iraq and Iran," said Hamad, without providing details.

Sure this guy is credible, The Times also reports that Qatar and the Saudis agreed to fund the Syrian opposition. Do you see anything wrong here ? no ? go read your link page again and tell me its just an Iranian thing or that there is any proof. Or better still try a few other links on google. These Mercs can be from just about anywhere in the region.
