you have to join a town and sell it in the general store, but atm there are no general stores until they are built by the town owners ;)

When you're around level 8 the sheriff will give you a quest were you have to get a donkey which you can only get from a general store. If your not in the town and buying it from the outside it can come up to $1000 but in the town about $250. So towns play a big part in the game.
