Just click "complete the quest" and whether or not you defeat him is shown at the top. If you do not defeat him, just keep clicking complete until you do.

yea that quest really comfused me too when i first did it.

You will probably have 2 in your messages. I had 1 showing I didn't beat him the first time, then the 2nd showing I beat him. That's a quest you really don't have to do anything but click complete quest about 2 times on. In W2 I had to click it 3 times.
