Cons - Waste of money, Waste of time, More chances to be killed, More chances to lose money, No benefits, Angers other people with your 500pt town that probably wont ever grow

If you already have friends in the game that can join and help you grow the town, then the pro would be feeling good about making something that is down to your collective effort.

If however you are on your own, you may have trouble attracting other players to your town - a 1 player town is not a nice place to be. You will find it very hard to make buildings as there is only 1 money generator to pay for them. You will also be open to attack from rival town's duelers. In this case I would suggest you find a town you like the look of, and help them grow.

A town really needs a bunch of active, enthusiastic players to succeed - duelers/soldiers for protection, builders to make better buildings and adventurers to pump them full of cash!

hmmm i see i have found a town with 911 points so it is almost double the starting points

The $300 to found a town is the smallest amount you pay. Upgrading the town from 500 to 42800 points (the maximum possible) takes about $100,000. You will need good or pure builders to upgrade the town, else the cost might be $200,000.
You should consider that somebody abandoned the 911 points town for some reason (usually to join a bigger, 10000-20000 points town). If you cannot get into a bigger town (at level 9 it's difficult, towns are looking for higher level players), you have these options:
1. Found a town (or join a small town), work and level up, then join a bigger town.
2. Play without a town, keep the money (except $10 for sleeping), level up, and once you are level 15+ try to join a bigger town.
3. Found a town and run it until it gets big. Set the rules, invite players to join, dismiss those who don't respect those rules. Make pacts with neighbors. Control your anger when you get dueled repeatedly. Be disappointed when people leave your town.

Almost all game have difficulty isn't it?
The-West is one of them..

Easy Mode: Found a town & You already have more than 10 waiting list
Normal Mode: Join another town
Hard Mode: Found a town and you don't know who will join your town someday

you want to found a town with all the risk?
you need more challenge?
good luck then
;)

It's like I said before. You need AT THE VERY LEAST...4 other LOYAL friends to help you build up your town and guard it from renegade duelers.

Here is a question I cannot find the answer for.

What if you have built the town up to its maximum so there can be no more building on it. What happens to the money in the treasury and can we still put money in the treasury maybe to do something else with it?

The money stays in town's treasury, and you can still donate.
And at one point this year there'll be a sheriff's building to be built in towns, and -maybe- the forts for the shootouts are financed with town's trasury as well.

I built up my own town from scratch in a location which was good for me, with all my favourite jobs nearby - and even better ones have appeared there too. In another world I did the same and other people have joined. I like to use the town forum to create areas of the town for the members to interact and do things, and organise contests, though the few town members are not very interested at the moment. I don't actually invite anyone to my towns yet, I just wait for people passing by to ask.

But my main character lives alone, in a land where there are many large towns looking for members. I am building up my town by myself fairly fast, and can work on whatever building I need to be upgraded. I could do it a lot faster and more efficiently, but I do not like to specialise very much and prefer to experience all parts of the game and do whatever I please. It is very satisfying to see my town grow, knowing every part was built with my own hands. And likewise it is satisfying to defend it from robbers, who are wasting their time anyway, as usually most of my money goes into improving the town.

It would be easy to join a large town and have everything already accomplished without any effort, but if you like more of a challenge I would recommend starting your own town, or joining another small one with only one or two other members. But you should only do so if you are prepared to do most or all of the work yourself and you wouldn't mind if few or no other people joined. But who knows, maybe it could end up being the most awesome and popular town in the land.

Well, it's about time I "found" somebody else who thinks like I do about founding towns.

I have to agree, founding a town by yourself is a lot of work and significantly harder than joining an established town, but if it fits your play style then go ahead. I've done so with my char on one world and it seems to work out quite well.
