Does anybody know what the Mortician is or what it's for? Does it actually have a purpose?

There is a huge ? icon on your game map, if you click there and select Towns, from the menu on the left, then town buildings .. and finally Mortician - all will be revealed.
The question mark leads you to the help menu, it is full of useful information.

Incase you didn't actually read what Rose of Albama said, the mortician is used so towns can actually DUEL PLAYERS. People can still duel you even if you don't have a mortician in your town.

The mortician is needed to challenge other players to a duel. If your town does not have a mortician, you cannot challenge anyone, but you can still be challenged by other players. The mortician only has one level.
