Indian. What an American word to use.

I have always hated political correctness names to a point. Short is short. It's not vertically challanged. Etc. Now that said the term Indian is a term that was incorrectly applied due to foolish westerners to begin with, but Native American is not a whole lot better. A Native Californian is someone born in California, Native Belgian is someone born in Belgium, so why does Native mean anything other than someone born in America? Sure, they were here before Europeans, but they came from somewhere else originally as well. (not getting into that either). One term out of favor but one I preferred was American Indian or Amerind, which takes the historical and inaccurate designation of Indian but distinguishes it from a true Indian. Lets coin our own. How about Tribal American. :) Or we could just take anyone born here lump them all together as 'Americans'. I think that is more important than any designation of race or ancestral nationality. (Are African Americans more like white Americans or actual Africans?)

Now I prefer to show respect to all and just politely upgrade each to the lofty position of Chief. Hey Chief. Now due to this I have lost a few teeth, but I prefer to think of my mouth as half full instead of half empty. :D

As to political correctness in the game, what is politically correct about running around stealing, robbing and dueling? You could 7 people today, which is fine, but you called someone a socially insensitive or ignorant term and that is unforgivable. Please.

Early American history is filled with ignorance, hatred and brutality. Just about every group aside from caucasians (and some of those too (Irish for instance)) have been singled out for abuse, 'Native Americans' pretty high on the list. If that is too ugly for you, why are you playing a game based in a time and place where they were slaughtered for their land or just plain ignorant hatred? Go play the Happy Fairy Joy MMORPG (I'm a level 57 Sprite Cupcake Maker).

Indian or (politically correct at the time) Red Man would be the most historically accurate term for the diverse groups of people native to the country before European settlers invaded. Technically each should be referred to by their tribal association but since there were more than a hundred tribes, a broader term is useful.

So if we are going to put ourselves in the role of these people lets not quibble over what we call them as we steal their land and reduce their populations. "We're going to steal your land, relocate anyone who survive and assimilate you by force." "That sucks." "We'll call you Native Americans as a belated sign of respect, and as a sop for our collective conscience." "Well, thats ok then."

My wife is part Cherokee by the way. One of my best friends growing up was Pawnee/Choctaw. I certainly have no negative feelings towards Native Americans, in fact I greatly respect their heritage and mourn the atrocities commited against them by my past countryman, but slappy a 'politcally correct' bandaid/label hasn't made much difference. Ask a few. Now the casinos and the government rolls help much more. :)

Sorry for the diatribe. And when able to choose class soon it will be a Native American one and I'm going to burn each and every one of your towns down and take your women. Once we've taken over we'll call you Pigmentally Challenged Americans. To your face. You'll still be palefaces when you aren't around. Keeping the casino's though. You can have free cocktails.

It's evident that this game was made by some anti-aboriginal people, because if they bothered to realize that Indians in fact come from India, then we wouldn't have this problem. Don't tell me to "roleplay" I get very angry about these sorts of things. Call them a mohawk or something.

Native Americans were called Indians by the first people who came over here by boat...get over it.

Lol dam this dude must be racist, im very suprised he didnt add in about the mexicans. Hell if we call the indians mohawks, why not just call the mexicans wetbacks?
(I didnt read past page 3 but im pretty sure no one brought this up.)

Its a pointless argument. Native americans were, are and will still be called indians.

As a decendant the Native American's I can assure you that the term Indian is a bit outdated, but nonetheless ACCURATE! The settlers of the period called us Indians, we called ourselves Indians, and to this day we are spoken of an Indians in many places by ourselves, and the government, not to mention the "pale faces".

So unless you want to continue looking the fool, stop trying to be politically correct on a subject you do not know.

Shouldn't this be in the *****ing and Anti-Productive section...?

Oh wait, we don't have one.

Lawsuit!

To be absolutely correct, why not have the name changed to Skraelings? Its only fitting as the Vikings met them earlier and coined this name...(Yes, I'm being sarcastic) Mohawks. Laughable. :D People don't have enough to worry about these days it seems. RPG. Just do it. Never mind PC.
Speaking 'o which, I 'av to go, there's an Indian over here 'oo wants to buy one 'o my deer skins...

Or, in all fairness, we could just all be a little less offended by everything and just play the game. This world doesn't get any better if we just ban everything that makes someone uncomfortable. (Like with cursewords and violence on TV; it's better that parents explain their children how stuff works)

Back then, they were called indians; this game sets in that time. If we all just learn to see things in perspective, we'll be fine. No harm is meant, so don't search for reasons to be offended.

historical names for indians

since this is a game based on the Old West, people in those days called them Indians....or by the name of the tribe they were from. I do genealogy and know many people who are Native American from North Carolina...in those days Native Americans were called "free persons of color" "mulatto" "molatto" "indian" "croatan" "cherokee" "catawba".

So to say it is not correct, well actually they were not indians like Europeans thought they were. They were very indigenous, but ancestral DNA has proven they descend from Asian and Russian (Siberian) native peoples. How long they were here is a matter of debate. People in India today call them "Red Indians".

I know this is true what they were called and it is a matter of debate today. The federal census records from 1790-1870 call them those above mentioned names. Mulatto in those days was not "black-white mixed" as the term is applied today.

We are playing a historical game and historically they were called indians, whether we like it or not today. This game is also created by Germans. So to say indian or not, today let's answer it for today, we can't change the past. We can only change the future. This is not a bad game, perhaps not completely accurate as a lot of historical games are not. But to say they are anti-indigenous? No, I do not think so.

And we must remember the Indian Removal Act by Andrew Jackson to remove all indians east of the Mississippi. The assumption was that after 1840 there were no native peoples in the east, which is completely wrong as we have the Eastern Band of the Cherokees, Catawba, Waccamaw-Siouan, Halliwa-Saponi, Creek, Seminole, and the various Federally and State recognized tribes in the eastern states. Not all were out west, and to make the assumption is very wrong because there are millions in the east who know where they came from and not accepted by western tribes.

Again, I may not be Native American myself but I have friends who are enrolled in various tribes including Lumbee, Eastern Band of the Cherokee, PeeDee of South Carolina, Waccamaw-Siouan, and Halliwa-Saponi. My brother-in-law is Tuscarora.
