The problem with this quest is that if you have specialised and so not put points into duelling, you won't be able to beat the thief.
This does seem counter intuitive as the whole point of completing this quest is to enable you to streamline your skills i.e. specialise. What I am saying is that in order to beat the thief you are going to have to invest points into duelling, just to remove them again after you have completed the quest (At significant cost!)

TBH, it would be fun if you lost 1 random item to the thief for every 10h of doing the quest, and then got them all back at the very end after you find the "Final Solution to the Thief Problem"

Huh... the Re-Thievery quest, right? I have a 100% pure builder and didn't have much trouble with him. He hit me 4 for 39 the first time and I didn't hit at all so lost, and the second time he hit 2 times for 14 and I hit once, beating him 39-14. Maybe you're getting pounded because he uses a melee weapon and you don't have the defense skills for that? I don't know...
