Craigslist

There have been lots of stories in the news lately about crimes being committed with the help of Craig's List.

Some of the more recent ones include:

Man arranges to have wife sexually assaulted
Woman cuts unborn baby out of anothers womb
Murder
Prostitution
Not to mention Burglary, Scams and Predators

More crimes can be found detailed here: http://crimene.ws/category/craigscrimelist/

Craigslist has recently pledged to take steps to crack down on prostitution advertised on their site. Is it too little too late? There seems to be a rise in crimes committed where Craigslist is the middleman between criminal and victim.

Should Craiglist be shut down or do you think they can effectively police their own site so that it is not a criminal's database of potential victims.

Almost all of the victims of crimes that arose from ads on Craigslist forgot basic safety rules.

1) The most important thing when meeting anyone you "know" from on-line for the first time is to meet in a public, well lit, well populated place.
2) Make sure somebody you know and trust knows where you are going to be and for what reason
3) As soon as the slightest thing seems "off" find a way to remove yourself from the situation

Now, while these simple rules would apply to most transactions initiated through these ads it would not stop all crime. As for the prostitution question all you have to do is read the personal ads in almost any paper and you will find coded ads for prostitution (and that doesn't even take into account the escort ads in the back of any alternative newspaper)

I agree with you David. But as you know, even just using this forum as a sampling of human nature, there are some real dumb people out there.

I know you aren't blaming the victim but it could be construed that way. Sure, you shouldn't walk around with your head in the sand and not take measures to protect yourself but if criminals are finding Craigslist their most handy dandy tool to find victims I think there is cause for concern.

There was an marked increase in the # of serial killers in the US with the opening of the interstate highway system. Every new advance is going to be a haven/tool for people who wish to exploit it. The whole reason that CL is a success is the ease and cheapness that advertising can be done. Monitoring all the ads (with any amount of success) would probably bankrupt the operation.

As for blaming the victim........If you willfully engage in high risk activities and end up being hurt or killed because of it.........

Well I wouldn't call the pregnant woman that made friends with someone through Craigslist asking to be killed and her baby removed from her womb. Nor would I think the trusting wife should be suspicious that her husband would be involved in a brutal assault in her own home while her children were there.

I do understand what you are saying. I would just like you to say that blaming the victim is wrong because I really hope you aren't implying that you should. Sometimes victims do put themselves in bad situations. It is still the criminal that takes advantage of those situations.

There was a bank robbery here last year. the guy put an add on craigslist for jobs. He told people to meet him at a certain location, each of them different locations, told them to wear certain clothes, like black pants and white shirt. Said he'd pay good money and all that. So he robs the bank dressed just like that then somehow escaped on an innertube down the river. Cops arrested all the other guys and they were all like wtf does this mean I aint gonna get paid now? So far as I know, he got away clean.

like I said, so far as I know the guy got away. It was very interesting though.
