There are 4 buff types. Character, item, speed and active buffs. Of those 4, the first 3 will be shown on the buff list in the top right corner of your map upon using the items. Basically, the buffs work as follows:

    - Character buffs increase LP or skills for a limited amount of actions. E.g. jam and amulet.
    - Item buffs increase weapon damage or fort battle bonuses for a limited amount of actions. E.g. bayonet and cooling cloth.
    - Speed buffs increase speed for a limited amount of actions. E.g. feed bag and concentrate.
    - Active buffs restore health, energy or motivation, or do something else, instantly. Most create a timer for other active buffs. E.g. Christmas candy, easter eggs and the pipe brush.

Items can grant a combination of one of the first 3 types and an active buff. I have yet to see a combination of two of the first 3 types.
Using an active buff does not cancel any other buff, unless another buff type comes along with that usage.

Now, the tables showing which category each buff belongs to. You can use buffs of different types together (E.g. jam and bayonet), but not two from the same type (E.g. jam and amulet). I used tw-db to create this table, if I missed an item, feel free to let me know. Also, if something is not phrased clearly or you don't understand something, let me know.

A small note, if it says something like below in the "Effect" column, it means the item has an active component that refills a part of your duel motivation, which is only done once, when you use the item, and a buff component that increases your speed for some amount of uses.
Duel motivation increase (active) & +15% speed

Another small note. If an item grants you a skill bonus, and you do a job that requires that skill, one action will be removed upon queuing that job.

If I have the name of an item or the bonus wrong, let me know :D

  2. Great guide and summary - thanks. I was never sure which blacksmith buffs were for duels and which for fort fights until I actually used them. A guide like this when buffs were introduced would have saved a whole heap of trouble and confusion. Thanks again.

Added the amount of uses each buff has. Will add the 1.35 things soon.

Do let me know if I forgot any items beside those 1.35 items :)

I am wondering does +3 fort defense means (weapon chain)

+ 3 in defense in either a fort attack or fort defense?
    OR
+ 3 to both attack and defense in a fort defense ?

    Thank you!

Regarding the work instructions: It looks like they don't allow you to perform a job that you don't have the skill for without the buff, true? (Example: 30 labor points short - not allowed to add the +75 to make the job possible)

With any LP buff (from the UP shop, slices of cake, gentleman's dinners) you have to refresh if the buff made it possible to do the job.

  11. So you can use Work Instructions together with a Gentleman's Dinner, but not two work instructions together? My UP store only offers up to simple work instructions. How do you get advanced or expert?

No, they're all character buffs, they don't stack.

As for the second question, there are pages in the shop. The rest of the buffs are on the other pages.

Could I get to know what achievement gives you the
    Health Elixir?

I just had it drop in my Inventory without having bought it in UP shop?

Kinda weird even though I,m rather glad, of course!
    :)

    Good day all, Bloodtrayl.

    P.S. I did complete the tutorial today ( lvl 73, sigh/LOL ).
Could that be it? If so, I,ll pass the word to my noobs, LOL.

Edit : Just Found it in most recent achievements, no need for answer, was the tutorial indeed, sorry all

Should we assume that if we buy Instructions from the UPB and use them one time, that they will continue to be in use for the successive jobs until they run out?
So if I buy instructions that are good for 5 uses and do Free Slaves 4 times to get Peace Flowers, and right after that I do Picking Tobacco - I'll get all those extra LPs for Picking Tobacco?
It would be nice if you could activate the instructions for specific jobs, one use at a time - but I don't know how easy or difficult it would be to get that to work.

Yes, exactly like any other character buff (or any other multiple action buff for that matter).

Seems prohibitively complicated, and instead of getting a buff with 5 actions, you'd be getting 5 buffs with 1 action.

Is the Slice of Cake supposed to be consumed by Praying? Because it seems as if that's what happened.
I can do Breaking up Gangs with 3 LP. I thought I'd try it with a slice of cake so I might get a better drop. MIGHT.
After my previous job I had Sleep and Praying queued - I dressed for the job, activated a slice of cake and and added the job to my queue. With the slice of cake activated, the job screen should have said 18 LP, I thought, but it still said 3 LP. I thought I might be wrong, so I killed Sleep and then killed Praying to go directly to the job - I looked up to where the buff icon should be and it was gone - not really a shock, since it should be anyway because the job is now activated.
I looked at the job display again and it still said 3 LP.
I thought that if I try to remove a piece of gear that offers less than 18 LP for the job I could still be able to do the job - if I get the error telling me I need it for the job, then that should mean that the slice of cake was consumed not by the job but by praying instead.
I tried to remove my Fireworks rocket, which offers 10 LP for any job - if the cake was active for the job I should still have 8 LP left and I should be able to remove the rocket without getting the error message.
But I could not remove the Rocket, because "You need this item for one of your work assignments". So that tells me, unless I am very much mistaken, that the Slice of cake was used up by Praying and NOT by any actual job.
