In the german version you needed berries for a pretty important quest, but that quest is not imported into this version I think. Maybe theye will add it later, maybe theye won't. You have unlimited space in your backpack so I think you can keep them.
I can only quote myself, there is no such quest (yet) in this version. So I would say you don't need berries.
edit: but you can keep them if you want to

I intend to now. As I cant do my next quests (need to level up 3 times or get hold of a donkey) I am spending my time getting hold of as many different products as I can (they might come in usefull later...). So far I have Grain, Cotton, Trout, Berries, Posters, Newspapers, Beans, Corn and Fools Gold.
