Which Roman festival, from Roman times, draws direct threads to Christmas as we know it today?
The answer is Saturnalia festival given in honour of the god Saturn, held on 17 December of the Julian calendar and later expanded with festivities through to 23 December.

Saturnalia, held in mid-December, is an ancient Roman pagan festival honoring the agricultural god Saturn. Saturnalia celebrations are the source of many of the traditions we now associate with Christmas :D
