Folklore says that if you light a brand new bayberry candle on Christmas Eve you will have health, wealth, and prosperity for the new year. You absolutely must burn it all the way down to the bottom. The legend of the bayberry candle says that “A bayberry candle burnt to the socket brings food to the larder and gold to the pocket.” But where do this tradition and legend start?

Legend has it that bayberry candles were made in the eastern coast of America which were the first scented candles ever made. The settlers there realized there was a scarcity of supplies which included even candles. To keep their homes illuminated, they had to collect tallow, which was animal fat obtained by slaughtering animals, to make candles out of it. This tallow gave out foul odor. On an average, 300 – 400 candles were required in a year, thus, making these candles in bulk would be a grueling task for the inhabitants.

It started in New England, in colonial times. Poor families couldn't afford to use bayberry and beeswax all year round, so they only used them for Christmas time.

bayberry candles were made by the colonists for a special occasion, because their normal candles had a foul odor as they rot, and it took many bayberries, 15 lbs, to make one candle

When colonial families settled in New England, in richer families, the women would make their candles from beeswax or bayberry wax because the smell was much nicer than tallow. Not all families could afford this luxury all of the time. So, women saved the bayberry candles for Christmas time or other special times of the year. Because this was such a treasured tradition, the legend of the bayberry candle was born.

The legend of the bayberry candle came hundreds of years ago from New England, better known as the east coast of USA today, where colonial families settled down and so the tradition became "invented". It's told that they were the first scented candles ever made and has since been celebrated every christmas eve & new years eve, simply because it creates a closer bond and improves relationships.

Burning a bayberry candle on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve has been a Coal Region tradition for generations. The Coal Region is a historically important coal-mining area in Northeastern Pennsylvania in the central Ridge-and-valley Appalachian Mountains.
