The tradition of the Christmas pickle ornament supposedly hails from Laschau, Germany, many years ago. The pickle ornament was the very last one to be hung on the fir tree on Christmas Eve. The parents would hide the special pickle ornament deep inside the green fir boughs. On Christmas morning, the children immediately began searching for the special pickle ornament. They believed that the first child to locate the pickle ornament would receive an extra gift from St. Nicholas in addition to their other gifts. If the family couldn’t afford the extra gift, the child who found the pickle ornament was the first one to open presents instead. Dill pickles: they are bacteria- and virus-fighting wonder pickles. Time and time again, the juice and the pickles is used to help someone sick come back to health.

From the victorian era it is a tradition to place a pickled cucumber as a decoration under the christmas tree together with the other gifts. Whoever finds the pickle first in the morning would receive another gift from santa claus or have great fortune for a year.

On Christmas morning, the first person to find the pickle gets the right to open the first present, gets an extra present, has good luck for a year, or whatever family tradition dictates. The origin and history of this tradition is fuzzy at best. While there are many claims as to how and where the tradition started, many believe the Christmas pickle tradition started in the 1800's when F.W. Woolworth began importing glass-blown pickle ornaments from Germany. As a marketing gimmick to increase sales, cards explaining the "ancient German tradition" were attached to the pickle ornaments, sales took off, and a tradition was born.

Some Germans hang a pickle-shaped glass ornament on the Christmas tree hidden away so it's difficult to find. The first child to find it on Christmas morning gets a special treat or an extra present.
